Drill Beat Maker
Drill is defined by its hats and its snare placement. The preloaded pattern uses a 3-3-2 hat shape, a snare on beat 3 plus a late pickup on the final 16th, and an 808 that moves between notes.
Long distorted 808, tight hats, hard clap
808 bass & chords
F#m → E → D → E
The 808 follows the chord root in each bar; set a step's offset to walk the bassline. Pads hold until the next chord hit. Stabs are short.
Click a step once for a hit, twice for an accent, three times to clear. Space plays/stops, T taps tempo, R makes a random beat.

How to make a drill beat
- Set the tempo around 140–144 BPM.
- Snare on beat 3 (step 9), plus an extra snare on step 16 that pushes into the next bar.
- Program hats in groups of 3-3-2 (steps 1, 4, 7, 9, 12, 15) rather than straight 8ths.
- Let the 808 play longer notes and change the "808 note" between bars for the sliding feel.
- Sprinkle a percussion blip or rim on the off-beats for the dark, sparse drill texture.
Typical tempo: 138–145 BPM. Need to match a reference track? Find its tempo with tap tempo.
Drill hats skip in a triplet-like 3-3-2 shape, and the snare lands late on the last 16th of the bar.
Drill beat questions
What is the difference between drill and trap?
Both sit around 140 BPM, but drill hats skip in triplet-like groupings, the snare often lands late in the bar and the 808s slide between notes. Trap hats are usually straight 16ths with rolls.
What BPM is drill?
UK and New York drill are usually produced between 138 and 145 BPM, felt in half-time.
