Trap Beat Maker
This grid is loaded with the Trap kit: a gliding, overdriven 808 tuned to the key, a hard clap on beat 3 and hi-hats that switch between 8ths and 16ths. Press play, then start moving hats around. That is where trap lives.
Long distorted 808, tight hats, hard clap
808 bass & chords
G#m → E → B → F#
The 808 follows the chord root in each bar; set a step's offset to walk the bassline. Pads hold until the next chord hit. Stabs are short.
Click a step once for a hit, twice for an accent, three times to clear. Space plays/stops, T taps tempo, R makes a random beat.

How to make a trap beat
- Set the tempo between 130 and 160 BPM. The clap on beat 3 makes it feel half as fast.
- Put the kick and the 808 on the same steps, then tune the 808 with the "808 note" control to fit your melody.
- Program straight 16th hats, then delete a few and double others to make rolls and gaps.
- Add one open hat just before the clap, or on the last 16th of the bar, as a pickup.
- Keep swing at 0%. Trap drums sit on the grid; the bounce comes from the hats.
Typical tempo: 130–160 BPM (felt at half-time). Need to match a reference track? Find its tempo with tap tempo.
Bursts of 16ths (and 32nd rolls in a real session) in the hats are the signature of trap.
Trap beat questions
What BPM is trap?
Most trap is produced between 130 and 160 BPM, with 140 as a common default. Because the clap or snare lands only on beat 3, it feels like half that tempo (70 BPM).
How do I make 808s hit harder?
Line the 808 up with the kick, keep the kick short so the two do not fight, and add drive. In BeatCraft the Trap kit already saturates the 808; raise its track volume and tune it to the root note of your song.
How do I make hi-hat rolls?
Fill a run of consecutive 16th steps on the closed-hat track (for example the last four steps before the clap) and accent the first one. Switching to 32 steps gives you finer rolls.
