How to make a rap / hip hop beat

  1. Choose a tempo that suits the flow: 85–95 BPM for boom bap, around 140 for trap-style rap.
  2. Snare on 2 and 4 (steps 5 and 13). This is the backbeat a rapper locks onto.
  3. Place kicks on 1 and in the gaps around the snare, e.g. steps 1, 8 and 11.
  4. Add 22–30% swing to the hats to get the classic head-nod.
  5. Leave bars simple. Rappers need room; add a fill only every 4 or 8 bars.
